PROJECT ENGINEERING

As part of the BEng in Mechanical Engineering at Brunel University a one year industrial placement gives student engineers experience in the field. As a project engineer with the hydraulics firm, South Eastern Hydraulics, the design of hydraulic power systems was where I gained this valuable experience. As an engineer with an interest in motorsport, the importance of hydraulics in Racing Car design was the attraction. Only now in 2011 are we seeing this come through to the latest Fiat twin air and multi air engines.

Legoland
When Legoland in Windsor was built it was important to have great rides which would be exciting and fun. Modern amusement parks like this rely heavily on hydraulics to power and control the rides. Powerpacks and cylinders were designed tested for Legoland's rides.

Flight simulators
Hydraulics are fundamental to creating a realistic simulator ride. Hydraulics produce a physical force which can be controlled and modulated very accurately whilst delivering very high levels of power. These systems were both produced and maintained for a number of clients.

Co-Steel Sheerness
Hydraulics are ideal for delivering the high levels of power and speed required to cut steel as it comes out of the furness. A new cutting system was designed for Co-Steel Sheerness.

Injection Moulding

Working with a small firm delivering specialised injection moulding equipment several hydraulic cylinders were designed to their exacting specifications.

Paper Manufacture
Hydraulics are a fundamental part of paper manufacture with paper roles weighing 40 tonnes and more rotating at high speeds. Power packs were designed for the production of paper for the national UK newspapers.
